How to Configure and Use Upload IP

Menu Location: Menu Location: Settings - This Computers IP Address - IP Address

Visit www.fgeng.com , there will be a Video Site Monitor  User Page, or something like it, and a link to Current Remote Server Address. There obtain the current address for the remote server, and enter it in Address of Remote Server field for the Video Monitoring Software program.

Observe when connecting to the internet where the new current IP address appears, at the top or bottom of List IP Addresses menu item? If it usually appears at the top of the list then check menu item, Use Top IP Address.

Disable, Enable Upload IP.  Enable, Show Upload Errors, and enable Show Errors in Message Box.

Go to menu item Settings, Save Configuration and save the configuration to file.

Log onto the internet with your computer.

Now select menu item, Settings, This Computer's IP Address, Test Upload IP, and test the Upload IP function.

If the test worked, the status bar will read, "Trying to Upload IP", then "Sent IP OK". If the test failed the status bar will read, "Could not Upload IP - ..." and the message box will give the cause of the error.

If  test failed. Try to remedy the cause as shown in the error message. Check the Remote Server Address - enter it in a web browser and see if you get a response. It may be possible the server is temporarily off line - try again later. Check web site for more information or email tech support.

If the above succeeded, visit www.fgeng.com, look for a link, Find Your Video Monitoring Software Program on the Internet - check the Video Monitoring Software User Page. Click on the link. The link will take you to a web page which will ask you to enter your Video Monitoring Software Remote ID  (obtain this number from menu item Settings, Internet  Communications, Video Monitoring Software Remote ID). Enter that number in the form, and the form will return a web page with a link to your computer and your computer's IP address, as well as the time it was uploaded. Check that the returned information matches your computer information i.e. IP address from List IP Addresses menu item. Click on the link, the link should take you to your Video Monitoring Software log on page on your computer - assuming the Web Version of the program has been properly installed on your computer. Follow the procedure in this paragraph if trying to find your Video Monitoring Software computer, from some other computer on the internet. Make a note of your Video Monitoring Software Remote ID number before leaving home or the office - it will be needed to enter in the locater form at the www.fgeng.com web site.

Now that the Upload IP feature has been verified to work properly, it needs to be configured for automatic operation.

Log off the internet.

Enable, Show Upload Errors, and disable Show Errors in Message Box. Enable, Enable Upload IP.

The status bar should show message, "Could not Upload IP", as the program tries to upload the IP address, but cannot since there is no internet connection.

Log on to the internet.

The status bar will read, "Trying to Upload IP", then "Sent IP OK".

Then anytime you log off the internet, the status bar should show message, "Could not Upload IP", as the program tries to upload the IP address, but cannot since there is no internet connection. The message will appear every 60 seconds or so. This is normal status reporting if the Upload IP feature is enabled. If  this message is bothersome, disable  Show Upload Errors, and Show Errors in Message Box if necessary.

Note:

(1) Use the Upload IP feature to run whenever your computer starts up, or restarts after a power failure, and the dynamic IP address changes e.g. with a cable modem or an ADSL internet connection, or analog modem that always redials on a lost connection. This feature will assure you can always find the computer remotely over the internet providing you can configure your internet connection to connect automatically on computer start. To set this up do:

  • Go to c:\program files\site monitor\sitemon.exe and make a shortcut to the program. Copy it to your windows startup folder.
  • Start the Video Monitoring Software program. Put it into Web Mode, enable Capture.
  • enable Enable Upload IP
  • save the configuration.

Result: when the computer restarts the Video Monitoring Software program will start in Web Mode, and upload the IP address to the remote server. Then find the new  dynamic IP address and link to your Video Monitoring Software program at the www.fgeng.com web site.

(2) If  Enable Upload IP is enabled, and Windows Internet Explorer is configured to  "Always Dial My Default connection", the program will automatically dialup the internet. Uncheck "Always Dial My Default connection" in the Internet Options, Connections dialog, as well as uncheck  "Dial whenever a network connection is not present". This will cause the Upload IP feature to poll without causing a connection to be initiated to the internet.

There is a file in c:\program files\site monitor, called FindMyIP.htm. Edit this file and put it on your mobile device for a quick way to find your Video Monitoring Software System IP address on the internet. Handy if you have a changing dynamic ip address.
