Finding Your Computer on the Internet

After you configured your network for remote access to your computer from over the internet, you will probably want a way to find your computer on the internet when you are a way from home. So that you can log into the Video Surveillance WebCam Software to check alarms, review captured video files, and do remote viewing.

There are many ways to find your computer address on the internet.  You would enter something like http://MyIpAddress/logon.htm in your web browser, which would then connect you to computer on the internet running the Video Surveillance WebCam Software. Where MyIpAddress would be whatever your computer or router's IP address happens to be at that particular time.

Static IP Address

Is best. Your Internet Service Provider can provide you with one. Use it for your internet connection for your modem or router. Then you always have the same address to find your computer on the internet. ISP's may charge you extra for this. 

• best overall for any type of internet connection. 
• no other ip address tracking is necessary.

Dynamic DNS

Dynamic DNS a good option if you are using a router and your router is always changing its ip address. Some routers support this feature and some do not. Your router sends its ip address to server on the internet. This way your router always has the same address. Sometimes this service is free.

• good for router since it may be free, but takes more work to setup. 
• no other ip address tracking is necessary.
• set IP/URL Address with the assigned address or URL name.
• use Router links in Media Player Page for video streaming from the internet.
• use Computer links in Media Player Page for video streaming within your LAN.

IP Address Tracking

Use our IP Address Tracking function built into the Video Surveillance WebCam Software. Good for ADSL or cable modems. Can track IP address of a router or modem-router if it does not change its IP address too frequently eg within 24 hours.  Tracks ip address about every 3 hours.

• good for simple modem
• can be used for modem-router or router if  they do not change ip address within 24 hours.

• for router or modem router use Remote View Manual Method from the internet.
• use Computer links in Media Player Page for video streaming within your LAN.

Third Party Software

www.dyndns.org has a list of other third party software that can track IP address. Or do a search of the internet under "ip address tracking".

• set IP/URL Address with the assigned ip address or URL name if one provided and use Router links in Media Player Page for video streaming from the internet.

Your Own Method

Example lookup your ip address and write it down on a piece of paper when leave home. Use menu item Show Computer's IP Address. Lookup the IP address of your router if it does not change to frequently.
